Hybrids eating up the market

The sales of hybrid vehicles sold in the United States alone topped four million through 2016! Hybrid drivers account for 36% of America’s road warriors, second only to Japan. Why such a large market share you ask?

Hybrids consume less gas and emit less CO2 than a “regular” car. Some hybrid owners also enjoy lower road taxes in the first year as well as lower a company-car tax. This is a thumbs-up to your wallet and to the environment.

Hybrids heating up the market

What makes a hybrid a hybrid? A hybrid is the combination of two things, in this case it is the combination of an electric motor and combustion engine. Why? Because they both excel at different things. An electric motor produces torque (or turning power) more efficiently, while the combustion engine is better at maintaining higher speeds. Combining the two allows switching from one to the other at optimal times, creating the best fuel efficiency for the vehicle. The electric motor uses energy stored in batteries, but hybrids are not plugged in. Instead, the batteries receive charges through regenerative braking as well as by the internal combustion engine.

Ho-hum? Not a chance

It all sounds very practical and maybe a bit snooze-worthy, but thankfully practical does not have to translate to boring, thanks to the geniuses at Porsche!

We bring you the 2020 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-hybrid takes 670 horsepower from the gas-electric powertrain and combines it with a 541 twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. Throw in the 134-hp electric motor, and the Turbo S E-Hybrid is seriously packing. Packing enough power to go say, 60 miles per hour in 3.6 seconds, and then cruise up to a max 183? By all means, yes and yes!

Decisions, decisions

Power is fun, but so are choices! The Turbo S E-Hybrid comes with a ton of standard options and performance features. Give yourself over-sized carbon-ceramic brakes, active roll-bars, a torque-vectoring rear, and the Sport Chrono package. Make you Porsche truly your own. Available to Porsche drivers in a beautiful sleek style or the always loved standard. Chrono adds a mode-selector switch mounted on the steering wheel as well as launch control. The high-end option includes a 7.2-kilowatt charging cable, allowing 14.1-kilowatt-hours of battery life, getting a full charge in less than 2.5 hours on a 240-volt plug.

The 2020 Turbo S E-Hybrid is expected to offer over 20 miles of all-electric driving when slipped into the emissions-free E-Power setting.  There is also the choice of Hybrid Auto, Sport or Sport Plus mode. The E-hold setting helps maintain the battery pack’s charge.

Under the hood

The Cayenne Coupe E-Hybrid packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and 134-hp electric motor for extra-oomph. This dynamic-duo brings an awesome 455 peak horsepower. The Coupe is expected to glide along for about 20 miles before transitioning over to the gas-electric Hybrid Auto Drive mode.

The high-tech Porsche Hybrid System can be used to get the most out of fuel economy or to tap into the ultimate in-car performance. Choosing how and when to you use the electric and internal combustion is up to you and how you like to cruise. In either case, the 2020 Porsche Cayan S E-Hybrid is the hybrid-cruise for you!
