Porsche is celebrating 70 years of the Porsche sports car, and with age comes wisdom, and also one cool new ride!

 

No more secrets

The silence is over! The car dubbed “Mission E” when it was still a concept car back in 2015, is out, and boy was it worth the wait! Years of teases, name changes and spy shots have culminated in the release of the Porsche Taycan, Porsche’s first all-electric sports car. 

 

Happy horses

The Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S are truly driving machines that honor their Turkish namesake. Taycan is roughly translated as a “lively young horse.” That “lively” horse can be seen in the coat of arms in the Porsche crest and in the driving of the new Taycan.

 

According to Porsche AG CEO, Oliver Blume, the new electric sports car offers and athletic performance-oriented drive and is capable of longer distances. Like the ready-to-run horse in the Porsche crest, the Taycan is ready to give others in the EV arena a run for their money. And you can expect it to be a fast one. 

 

Sacrifice nothing

The Taycan is expected to offer supercar performance without throwing practicality into the trough. There are a few things that differentiates the Taycan from other sports cars. For one, it’s a sports car with four doors. (Remember what we said about practicality!) And, keep in mind, a nice partner of practicality is convenience. The Taycan offers that too. Loaded with screens and touch-sensitive panels, the Taycan is the first car with a built-in Apple Music app. Oh, and don’t forget about comfort. 

 

Porsche is promising a true Porsche premium-experience in the cabin of the Taycan, just a bit jazzier. Thanks to advanced production methods, the Taycan is expected to set new standards in sustainability and digitalization. 

 

Aspirations

The price tag of the Taycan will keep it as Porsche intended: an aspirational electric car, but there will be variants of the Taycan. The less powerful rear-wheel version or the Cross Turismo crossover will follow the two Turbos. While the EPA hasn’t been officially stated by Porsche, the range is expected to be about 300 miles on a full charge. 

 

Scaling it down

Both initial Taycan versions will use a dual-electric-motor set up to put out the equivalent of 616 horsepower. The Turbo will throw out 670 horsepower in the “launch control” mode. The Turbo S can put out 750hp in the same mode. The bottom line is that the Taycan Turbo can go from 0 to 60 in three seconds flat. The Turbo will blow your hair back with 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds. 

 

The two Turbos pull their power from a 93kWh battery pack that tips the scales at 1,389 pounds. The Turbo twins are both just a hair over 5,100 pounds, which is just a few pounds lighter than Tesla’s Model X SUV and a few LB’s higher than the Tesla Model S sedan.
