Porsche is known for designing sleek and technologically advanced vehicles that travel roadways throughout the globe. In 2019, for the first time, Porsche turned its superior design capabilities toward the stars. In collaboration with Star Wars and Lucasfilm, Porsche designed the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter which is a fantasy starship that was made to showcase Porsche's excellence in design and production. Porsche believes that projects like this are not only pleasing for fans, but they help to stimulate creativity that can be used to improve future Porsche models.
The Design Process
Creative teams from both Porsche and Lucasfilm worked extensively to design the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter. The groups of professionals worked independently in Germany and San Francisco on the design concept and, the two plans were brought together to create a buildable design. The entire process took approximately two months to complete and, the vehicle was put on display at The Rise of Skywalker's Hollywood premiere. In addition to the starship, the 2020 Porsche Taycan was on display at the premiere as well.
The teams were not bound by legality as they typically are when creating automobiles. The project gave them the freedom to create a vehicle that does not actually have to drive on the roads. However, they had to face new challenges that creating a starship in the Star Wars mold presents. The team focused on creating a design that can grab the viewer's attention and, keep them impressed long after the ship has left their view.
Porsche Leaves its Mark on the Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter
Michael Mauer, vice president of Style Porsche at Porsche AG, describes the Porsche influence on this starfighter, "'The design of the spaceship is harmoniously integrated into the Star Wars film world while at the same time demonstrating clear analogies with the characteristic Porsche styling and proportions". He believes that many aspects of the design, notably the tapered cockpit design, are similar to Porsche's two newest electric vehicles, the Porsche 911, and the Taycan.
The Porsche design influences do not end there, the interior of the cockpit was designed with a low seating position and driver-aligned axis that are similar to the 918 Spyder. Additionally, the four daytime running lights, 911 inspired third brake light, and the trademark Porsche light bar, are all designs that are typical of many Porsche automobiles.
Porsche and Star Wars
The Tri-Wing S-91x Pegasus Starfighter marks the first time that Porsche officially worked with Lucasfilm but, it is not the first Star Wars ship that was inspired by the automaker. The 2018 animated series, Star Wars: Resistance, featured a ship that was based on the design of the late 1960's 917 race car.
The ship was not completed in time to actually feature in the movie but, Lucasfilm VP and executive creative director Doug Chiang, states that it will likely appear in future Star Wars projects.
Porsche has an extensive history of creating legendary vehicles that inspire loyalty among drivers. Their first collaboration with the Star Wars brand produced a unique starship that fits within the universe but, retains much of what makes the Porsche brand great.
