Just as the 911 is a benchmark sports car, the Macan is a yardstick for other crossovers with sporty pretensions. Both the base 261-hp turbocharged inline-four and punchier 375-hp twin-turbo V-6 pair well with the Macan's dialed-in chassis; its transcendent backroad abilities cement its position in the Porsche bloodline. The Macan delivers Stuttgart athleticism in a more practical package than a 911, making it a winner in our books and earning it a spot on our 2026 10Best list. The Macan really comes alive with the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6powered S model. Quickness is important in a crossover with sporting intentions, but we wouldn't be nearly as impressed with the Macan if it weren't for its all-around competence on the road. It feels remarkably like a sports sedan, and the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic delivers rapid shifts worthy of the chassis and turbocharged engines. The ride is wonderfully damped and carefully controlled, and it's rare for a jolt from the pavement to throw the Macan off course. The Macan S is significantly quicker, hitting the 60-mph mark in just 3.8 seconds, trailing the more powerful GTS by only 0.3 seconds; it leaves both the Audi SQ5 and the Jaguar F-Pace S behind as well. An SUV probably doesn't need to launch off the line as quickly as the Macan does, but we sure appreciate it.
